TILT: Portland’s Best Burger and You Have Probably Never Heard Of It

I can’t believe I have never heard of this place before.  How is it possible?  These burgers are damn good. Too good to be that big of a secret.  We hear plenty about the usual suspects, Little Big Burger, Killer Burger, Five Guys, Foster Burger, etc…  It is time to add TILT to the list of Portland restaurants serving great burgers.

About a week and I half ago I came home early from work.  It was a Friday, neither my wife nor I felt like cooking, so she grabbed her iPhone and looked up restaurants on her Urbanspoon app.  By some miracle TILT showed up on the phone.  I always like trying new places so off we went.

TILT is located on Swan Island which mostly explains why it is such a secret.  Swan Island is the industrial super center of Portland.   I suspect TILT largely caters to the Swan Island lunch crowd.  We got there around 5:30 on Friday and it was mostly empty.

I also discovered that we were there during happy hour, and their happy hour is awesome.  $2 pints of craft beer.  That has got to be one of the better happy hour prices in town.  I’ve never been able to find a Ninkasi IPA for $2.  I’m pretty much sold at this point and I haven’t even gotten to the burger yet.

The menu is pretty solid and offers a lot of tasty sounding burger specials.  My wife ordered the Carne Jefe with fries and I ordered the Lambastic with tots.

Carne Jefe

My wife was kind enough to let me have a bite of this tasty looking burger.  The Carne Jefe was really good and had a decent kick to it, but nothing overwhelming.  The golden looking fries that came with it were also fantastic.

Lamb Burger

I had the Lambastic, a lamb burger.  It was good and had lots of flavor but it was a bit on the dry side.  Next time I think I will stick with the beef.  The tots that I ordered were really good.  They had a wonderful crisp to them and were great with the special sauce. They might be the best tots in Portland.  They looked like hush puppies.  It is too bad a side order only comes with six tots.

TILT also serves up biscuit sandwiches for breakfast and pie for dessert.  I believe most, if not all, of their baked goods are made from scratch, including those golden delicious buns that top their burgers.

TILT is not the cheapest burger joint in town, a meal will run you about $12 for a burger, fries, and a soda.  However, quality is not cheap, so go during happy hour to save a few bucks and take advantage of those $2 pints.

  1. OMG. Thanks for writing about Tilt. It’s been on my list for a while, now it’s official, I’m going. But do I go for breakfast or lunch?…. Biscuits vs. burgers is a tough decision.
