With a name like Lardo you know it is going to be good, right? Here are the only two things you need to know about Lardo to know it is worth a stop. First from their twitter page, “Bringing fat back in PDX.” Ok, you have my curiosity. And from their website, “Lardo is a modern sandwich shop and beer garden.” Beer garden? Fatty food? Check and check. I knew I was in the right place when you walk in the front door and a pig is painted on the wall.
We actually really lucked out when we visited because we got there at about 11:45. There wasn’t much of a wait but the food is made to order so it still took about 10 or 12 minutes to get our food. I’m glad we got there when we did because in a few minutes the line was literally out the door.
I get the feeling that this is probably a short line too. By the time we left this line was another 12 people deep. And now that I have tried the place, I know why, the food is awesome. I ordered the pork belly, egg, and cheese sandwich. My wife who was particularly hungry this day, ordered the double cheeseburger. I gave her a funny look when she ordered because I have never seen her eat a double burger before, and then when I saw the burger I instantly regretted not ordering it for myself.
Now this isn’t to say what I ordered wasn’t good, because it was very good, but the beauty of the burger was awe inspiring. My wife was also kind enough to give me a bite, and it was soooo good. Now on to want I ordered, which was very tasty but not nearly as visually pleasing.
Today I just read an article by Fred Armisen where he said the food culture in Portland is great because we put eggs on everything. I’m not sure if I have ever really noticed that before but I think he may be right. I had to try and block my wife’s delicious burger out of my mind so I could make an objective decision on the quality of this sandwich. I was very pleased when I took my first bite and egg yolk poured on to my plate. That is always a good sign. I quickly mopped it up with my sandwich and gobbled it down. We also ordered a side of lardo fries. Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of those because my two year old is a french fry junkie and immediately grabbed for them when they hit the table. They did not last long. When it comes to fries sometimes he reminds me of Chris Farley.
Lardo for a sandwich place, is a little bit on the expensive side. The burger was $9 and my pork belly sandwich was $8, with no sides. Normally, I consider that a knock against a place when I spend almost $10 on a sandwich and it doesn’t come with a side. But this is not your ordinary sandwich shop. Lardo tastes great because they use quality local ingredients which is worth the extra dollar or two. The difference in flavor is noticeable, or maybe it’s just the fat. Either way, it’s good, so go.by
